Between July and September 2023, I had the privilege of working with my Kwok Scholar fellow Ayo Chan in organizing BIOHK2023, an international convention which brought together pioneers in the field of biotechnology from across the globe. During those two months, I assisted the organization in coordinating communications with clients at the convention, organizing a study trip for Mainland Chinese firms to familiarize themselves better with the business environment in Hong Kong, and developing and editing various promotional materials for the convention.
Significant time pressure was often involved at this job, but it also motivated me to finish my tasks efficiently and productively, as well as to consider the relative priorities of various issues. I also noticed that this made for a more fulfilling work experience on the whole, as it often made me feel that I had made a valuable contribution to the overall success of the convention.
On the other hand, BIOHK2023 allowed me to come into close contact with numerous professionals in the field of biotechnology and other STEM-related subjects, such as Nobel Prize laureates, and their involvement at the convention also endowed me with valuable knowledge in their respective areas of expertise. Even though my current field of study is ostensibly not as related to STEM, this was still highly enlightening for my future career, as no field of employment can truly be separated from the concepts utilized in STEM.
My experience of working at BIOHK2023 allowed me to better hone my problem-solving skills, adapt to changing priorities, and work collaboratively. It also helped me develop a deeper understanding of the intricate logistics involved in organizing large-scale events, as well as reinforcing the importance of clear and concise communication in high-pressure situations. Overall, it was a challenging yet rewarding experience that significantly contributed to my professional growth, and I am truly grateful for the role the Kwok Scholars Association has played in my obtaining this opportunity.
Back in Oxford, this year I have been furthering my studies in the fields of politics and economics, covering topics such as international relations and econometrics. As is often the case for studying at Oxford, I also cherished the various opportunities of meeting with established figures that presented themselves, such as former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Apart from these, I continued to participate assiduously in organizing talks at the college by the PPE cohort, inviting academics within the college and elsewhere to share their insights on a breadth of topics, from refugee crises to religious beliefs. These experiences have allowed me to cultivate a deeper understanding of the complex issues facing our global society.
